Whoa, Hold on There, Cowboy…

Remember last week when yours truly was gushing on SMI’s Bruton Smith for possibly opening up some new venues to the IRL? It is time to temper that a bit. At the NASCAR race up at Loudon on Sunday he made a proclamation at the event. He did not hold back when he stated in no uncertain terms that he wants an Indy Car race in 2009 at his recently purchased New Hampshire oval. Oh, and should he NOT secure it, the IRL can forget talking to him about 2010 and beyond. Then Texas promoter Eddie Gossage stepped in to do damage control.

Perhaps Bruton should have his meds adjusted. I still like the guy, but don’t negotiate in the press with Indy Racing. Tony George has proven conclusively he is not afraid to tell anyone to go pound sand regardless of consequences.

The bad part of doing that would be the risk of rapidly becoming a lower tier niche road racing series with one big race on an oval. We know that won’t work. Look what happened to cart.

If I really wanted to stir things up and I had his money and penchant for being a random firing cowboy, I would ‘split’ even more from NASCAR and start a competing ‘stock’ car series with cars that are actually more ‘stock.’  An even bolder move might be to team up such a new series with Indy Racing, then run them together every weekend.  On NBC.

A boy can dream.

I like Juan Montoya as a NASCAR driver.  He will not put up with any of the redneck nonsense being bumped and banged his way, and he proved it again on Sunday.

Watkins Glen is next.  That is a beautiful natural terrain facility, and even though the racing will suck it will be a nice diversion.
