Common Sense: RIP

Filed under: The Disciple Blogs — Disciple of INDYCAR @ 12:43 pm

I hope common sense prevails following the Nashville Indy Car race.  The Indy Racing folks have been visiting for nearly a decade, and that venue is a perfect example of how a following has been built in a major southern area that comprised a hole in Indy Racing’s coverage.  Now, most of the talk is how this unique concrete oval is probably on the chopping block so that a road/street course, maybe even in another country, can be added in its place.

When will those in charge even begin to understand that you just do not screw loyal fans like that?

I am very happy that Tony George bailed champcar out and accepted ALL the remaining holdouts with no grudges.  It was the professional thing to do. What should NOT be done, however, is following the same, self destructive business model that caused their bankruptcy.  Twice.

If those people want street racing in Canada instead of a great little oval built from the ground up in the heartland, create a branch of the Indy Car brand for foreign, road racing, turbo loving, euro-centric nancy boys and let them have their right turns and precision shifts and timed braking and all that other nonsense that makes them feel smugly superior.  Just do not forsake the elements that rebuilt the product only to regress.  That will alienate the very last group of people not already disenfranchised by fan unfriendly stupidity.

Too many of these types of venues have been shut down for pretty weak reasons.  Pikes Peak International Raceway is one example, although that is more reflective of greed and fan unfriendliness on the part of ISC.  But Indy Racing just rolled over and allowed it to happen.  Where the hell is Michigan?  And Phoenix?

If cart of the early 1990’s is the goal, why was there a ‘split?’  I know….the answer is more complex, not the least of which was a de-emphasis of Indianapolis…I get that.  The point is the cart business model failed.  Twice.  They went through more failed leadership than the Italian government.

Moral of the story:  Do not screw over those who got you where you are.

  1. Preach on, D. We won’t agree on everything, but if TG and Co. leave Nashville Superspeedway hanging, they’re going to lose a lot more than just respect down here in Music City. And God help us all if the proposed street race downtown actually comes to pass.

  2. There will come a day, thank God, when fans of the visionary Tony George and lovers of predominately-oval Indycar series will exceed the current popularity blip for NASCAR. That day can’t come too quickly!
