How To Watch The Olympics for Something Other Than Medals

Filed under: The Disciple Blogs — Disciple of INDYCAR @ 12:59 pm

The Olympics begin in a few days. The NBC Universal platform is poised to present a more comprehensive blanket of coverage than at any other time in history. THAT is a partnership. You will see various events on the NBC network, cable channels MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Universal HD, Oxygen, Telemundo and others, including special channels and the Web. They will all be effectively cross promoted and packaged with a common theme for distribution across the platform.

Compare that to what Indy Racing gets from its television partner. Then try to prevent yourselves from laughing uncontrollably. ESPN and ESPN on ABC is all NASCAR all the time where racing is concerned. It is that way across the platform. On the web, there is a NASCAR section and an ‘all other racing’ section. NASCAR gets heavily promoted. Indy Racing does not get promoted at all. ESPN increasingly poaches IRL broadcast teams for use with NASCAR events.

My advice this week for IRL brass is to watch the Olympics on a wide variety of their channels to really see what you are missing. Or you could turn ESPN on any time and chances are you will see something about NASCAR at least once every fifteen minutes. Nothing about the Indy Racing ‘partner,’ however.

The single most significant marketing opportunity in the history of Indy Racing, nearly one hundred years, is about to unfold. The ‘Centennial Era’ offers so many marketing showcase possibilities that it boggles the mind. Should this history and marketing opportunity be squandered on a professionally irresponsible, neglectful ‘partner’ who has embraced a competitor or should the responsibility by sold to a real partner professional enough to understand and respect the significance of the next few years?

Watch the next few weeks with interest and think deeply about the benefit of a fresh start.

  1. Thank you very much for the outward thinking, you always find a way to bash ESPN……………………………………what we have here is a great american.

  2. Looks like Versus stole the IRL while the NBC brass was in China. Defender, you are the smartest person on earth.
