A Novel Approach: Responsible Cable Partner

Filed under: The Disciple Blogs — Disciple of INDYCAR @ 12:30 pm

Indy Car announced more specifics of the TV deal yesterday. ABC carries five races, and they begin with the 500. So much for building buzz beforehand. The subtle but continuing neglect of the franchise by the ESPN folks continues unabated. Considering the first two ‘races’ are street parade abominations and we have to wait until Kansas for an actual race where cars compete against one another that might not be a bad thing.

More good news is dramatically increased coverage on Versus. They get the first three and the final eight with a Richmond sandwich. All races are in HD, and the sheer amount of coverage expands dramatically. ABC gets Indy (hopefully they will not screw it up), Milwaukee (tradition), Iowa (fantastic new short track), Watkins Glen (a proper road course) and Toronto (a former pretty good cart party with alcohol and women, all disguised as a pretty boring street abomination) and will no doubt tout the schedule as representative of the diversity the series now has. How long before they re-plant Paul Page in the booth and play Delta Force?

Despite sky is falling wailing from cart-centric idiots obsessed with 12+ overnights as if they actually matter and not having the first inkling of how the television business operates, viewership increased last season by 21.4%. Numbers were up across the board.

Not yet announced is how the qualification coverage will be arranged, and that is going to be potentially more interesting than the rest of the schedule, which is:

I wish Michigan was back on the schedule. The stunning stupidity involved in excluding that track continues to be inexcusable. I am also of the opinion Pikes Peak needs to be made available again for Indy Cars.
