Organized Crime

Bloomberg reported on election day that Formula One wants to return to North America in 2010. Good luck. Neither Canada nor Tony George wants to pony up the vig being demanded by what appears to be a shakedown led by the increasingly elderly but no less greedy Bernie Eccelstone.

The current Honda Racing CEO Nick Fry is all for it, but not necessarily in Indianapolis. He prefers the East or West coasts. OK, Nick, where? IMS built the most functional facility and had the most attendance for years. Indianapolis is really the best option regardless of how much the uppity Euros turn their noses. The only thing needed is a title sponsor willing to part with the dough.

Watching a Formula One event is a really great thing and I never missed one at Indy. They do need at least two in North America, but not at any cost. If they keep screwing around with those who got them where they are today they will end up racing in front of sheiks in middle eastern nations almost exclusively. The economy of the world cannot support the kind of lunatic pricing being demanded. A Formula One title sponsor could spend a lot less money and get a lot more domestic exposure by becoming, say, the Indy Car Series title sponsor.

Food for thought.
