Welfare Vs. Willingness to WORK

Filed under: The Disciple Blogs — Disciple of INDYCAR @ 12:55 pm

How is it that an Indy Racing homegrown driver who is good on ovals can go out and get quality sponsorship that will enable her to run a mostly full schedule in difficult economic times, but bigger names and supposedly higher quality teams are walking around as if they are in soup kitchen lines in the 1930s?

Sarah Fisher is announcing additional sponsorship this morning to supplement the Dollar General sponsorship she has for four races. She has long been a fan favorite and one reason why is she understands grassroots marketing. She also pounds the pavement relentlessly in the search for sponsorship funding.

Perhaps Rahal-Letterman, Chavez-Hass-Lanigan, Kalkhoven-Vasser and others ought to follow Sarah’s lead and actually make a more concerted effort to structure and secure actual sponsorship instead of selling seats to highest bidders. That type of cockamamie behavior is one of the things that drove people away from cart in the previous century.

It is also relatively difficult to grow a fan base when every team has different drivers every year and displaced drivers (including previous season race winners) spend the next season walking around garages with their helmets.

Fans are happy we will see Sarah in action for most of the season. I am also looking forward to see what new drivers and teams can do.

One other completely unrelated item worth watching is the fight Ashley Judd is having with Sarah Palin over aerial hunting of wolves and bears in Alaska. She is featured in a video on behalf of Defenders of Wildlife that encourages Palin to stop it. Wonder whether Ashley will be prancing about in quaint summer dresses, Jackie O glasses and big hats in and around pit lane again this season now that Mr. Judd is back in the open cockpits where he belongs?

  1. Few points that I think should be made.
    1. What you think teams will actually actively work for sponsors, bahhh, why would they do that when Tony and the boys do it for them.
    2. That picture of Sarah is repulsive, looks absolutely nothing like her either.
    3. I say we adopt nascars policy (GASP), do everything possible to keep Ashley out of the pits.

  2. Here’s a few more points that should be made:

    1. Please use proper grammar.
    2. That picture of Sarah actually looks good compared to real pictures of her. Not sure what you find attractive, but to each his own.
    3) I say there’s nothing wrong with Ashley. She’s entitled to be there supporting her husband. But I do advocate keeping drunken illiterate haters out of the pits.

  3. Excellent commentary. Two thumbs up. Especially liked “Chavez-Haas-Lanigan”. 😀
