Racing for Old Men

Filed under: The Disciple Blogs — Disciple of INDYCAR @ 1:01 am

JPMThere are a few things NASCAR does that inspire me to try and watch their races on a relatively consistent basis. I do not know of many racing fans from any discipline that do not in some way like Juan Pablo Montoya. He is cocky and talented in that rare way that allows effective driving in a variety of disciplines. He is having a banner year this year in the tin tops.

Heavy TonyTony Stewart has always drawn interest because he is another of those throwback drivers with an attitude and a ton of talent. Lately the fortunes of Mark Martin have drawn my eyeballs toward the ‘stock’ cars because he is up there in the years department like many of us. He had a great race day this past weekend. He even has something in common these days with Danica Patrick (well, other than chest size) with an announcement that Godaddy is joining his sponsorship efforts.

79722337JH006_Daytona_500_FThat said, I always walk away slightly disappointed. It is not the lack of effort of the participants. The racing is just way too slow for my personal taste. I like it much faster. Indy Cars give that to me.

The NFL football game on Sunday night drew 21 million sets of eyeballs and was the number one show on television. Indy Car and even NASCAR wish they had that problem these days. What does the NFL do? I have begun to believe the biggest thing is parity. Any given Sunday. In Indy Car, only one other team besides Ganassi and Penske have won this year. Over the past few years it has been three teams. Honest parity will do more to inspire interest in the series than anything else. Even NASCAR features surprise winners relatively frequently.

That is a noble goal for next season.

  1. Very true, NFL has good Parity, except for those of us who live in Michigan…

  2. i think a noble goal for the irl next season, is to find a way to get chip to the buffet table before you have cleaned it up, you fat jello pudding f#*!wad of a man.

you are the load your sister should have swallowed.

imagine that, kicked off from every motor sports forum on the net, even your old racist puke friend howard dolan’s site (who farts dust, as opposed to when defender farts and it smells like *@$) and basically reduced to starting his own blog to maintain a semblance of relevancy.

here is a thought defender, get off your fat ass, shut the computer down and get out of your mom’s basement, lose some weight, and try to keep your stupid wife satisfied.

why do you write flattering things about juan pablo defender? he is a former cart driver, who waltzed into indy and waxed the irl boys arse’s up and down the speedway, in their own equipment. he does not respect the institution of indy, like you stated about the ’02 winner, paul tracy.

anyways, i will let you go, don’t want to keep you from sucking donkey $@%* fat boy.

Editor’s note: Seriously, get some help. You are a troubled, emotionally disturbed sociopath. 1-800-LIFENET is good, and so is 800-847-3802. You obviously need help.

  3. i need help? there is the pot calling the kettle black.

i never went out asking for pictures of alex zanardi with his legs being destroyed. i never made fun of greg moore or tony bettenhausen, or paul newman. i don’t go out in public, in front of little kids, with a shirt depicting an arrow pointing to my genitals. need more idiot?

but before you get help, you first need to get a life loser. lose some weight, do something about your receding hairline, and fix those god-awful teeth of yours. you upset your retarded little friend paff-tard has turned on you?

  4. Jay,

Perhaps you should take up cordless bungee jumping. Or attempt to learn cordial behavior because you’re the one looking bad on this exchange.

Your anger seems to be fueled from the depths of Hell. Settle down…….

  6. That’s better jay! Much better!!! You just might pass as a mammal.

I know several colleges that have been conducting anthropologic research. They would find you to be an interesting study on development of early man. Most important would be your cranial development and upright posture. They will also want to know more about your motor skills.

Although your behavior appears to be pre-Neanderthal, it is still not fully know if your type were able to fabricate tools, plant crops, and bury their dead.

    Your assistance will be appreciated.

  7. Wow this certainly has gotten out of hand but it is entertaining.

The Defender actually makes valid points in this particular blog entry with the biggest point being that the IRL needs parity. To expand on that the IRL desperately needs parity. I think it’s safe to say that most IRL fans root for the underdogs (which is every other driver other than the Penske and Ganassi cars) but the way the series is now…..the other 18+ drivers are all extreme underdogs that have little if any chance of winning. That turns fans off, especially the more casual fans.

From a common sense point of view where the hell is the fun in watching a race every week when you automatically know who is going to win? For whatever reason suckers like me and the rest of existing fanbase continue to watch but it’s getting harder and harder when every damn race is the same 3 or 4 cars competing for the win. Of course being a Directv subscriber I can’t even watch that anymore…..but that’s another issue (and an issue that will kill the IRL if they don’t get back on Directv)

Finally Jay makes a good point about Mike Miller.

Mike you really come off as a follower and Defender Ass-Kisser. All you do is agree with every single blog posting that he has and basically worship him. If you agree with him whatever who cares, but damn at some point you may want to actually form your own opinion and stop acting like the Defender is god’s gift to writing about Open-Wheel.

  8. Parity, is that like the supper bowl last January, when the Arizona Cardinals came within 1 minute of being the new Super Bowl Champion, they were eaten up by a giant much like the 500 is every year, Parity sure will not help the hapless cardinals this year, they are no better than Vision Racing, they will show up every Sunday win 35% of their games, lose the other 65%, guess they really are better than the Vision Racing team because Vision will lose 100% of their races in 2009.
