Indy Car Off-Weekend Notepad – Random Musings

Two things today:

First, the latest poster child for unrealistic Indy Car expectations whose schtick is an odd obsession that nearly always portrays the series and its IMS parent as one step away from the grave is an employee of a reputable publication, the Indiana Business Journal. The only real difference between Anthony Schoettle and the average IRL Internet hate site contributor is lack of cussing, more advanced literacy and text that has been spell-checked. Otherwise, the chicken-little paranoia of both is identical. How he stays employed with that particular publication given the gossipy, ambiguously sourced tone of his IMS obsession is a mystery. Nevertheless, it provides a consistent source of comedic relief. I highly recommend it. Haters have also discovered the ‘comments’ section that follow, and their special brand of illiteracy is also entertaining on another level.

Second, Randy Bernard understands the value of non-cookie cutter tracks. The NASCAR-style 1.5 mile ovals were phenomenal prior to the cart contingent slithering back to Indy Car following their well publicized boycott. Some, such as Texas, Chicagoland and Kentucky, still are. Unique ovals such as Milwaukee have gotten off track in the screwed up economic environment of the past few years. One objective seems to be to get such unique tracks back onto the Indy Car schedule.

Pocono used to be a mainstay on the Indy Car circuit many years ago, even before ‘The Boycott.’ The big triangle was the scene of many really good Indy Car races in years past. Many folks, including the next generation of its management, would like to bring Indy Cars back. It is probably a good idea, but not without significant improvement. There are parts of the track without catch fencing. SAFER barriers are a very recent addition. The surface of the track is not acceptable. It is old and bumpy. Apron areas are straight out of the 80s. The hit Elliott Sadler took against an inside wall of Armco and earth turned out fortunate for him. That hit in an Indy Car would have been a Greg Moore-like tragedy. Is Pocono willing to spend the money? It would be nice. A ‘triple crown’ return of 500 mile races would be very special. I would not hold your breath, however.



  1. Indy, Michigan and Pocono. An automotive Triple Crown–with some big ass sponsor offering kajillions of dollars to anyone who wins all three…

  2. I agree Defender, Pocono would be a valuable addition to the IndyCar circuit–weather notwithstanding, their climate seems to be worse than Indy’s. But yeah, a lot of changes/improvements would have to be made. I don’t know how Sadler DID survive that hit–about twenty years ago a driver hit the same kind of guardrail and earth placement at Atlanta–in much the same manner–and was killed instantly. Think of what it would be like with an open-wheel collision. I suppose it’s only a pipe dream to get Pocono back anyway, changes or no changes, but the fact that IndyCar even got a small oval like New Hampshire back is near-miracle.

  3. I know we complain alot about ABC/ESPN coverage of Indy Car but for ESPN not to have had a camera following the last half of the field (and thus missing the wreck of the year except for one lucky miniscule part) shows that even their coverage of Nascar is somewhat suspect.

    That Sadler walked away from that wreck is testament to the Hans device. Without that Sadler would not have survived that impact.

    Pocono needs be added to the Indy car schedule. The race can help pay for all the safety improvements that are needed!

    Love Indy Car racing at Kentucky Speedway. Can’t wait for the Cup race next year.
