IZOD Indy Car 2011 Schedule and Silly Season – It’s That Time Again

The IZOD Indy Car 2011 schedule will be released fairly soon, and the smart money points toward all ISC tracks being dropped. It is easy to understand the reason, but a loss of Chicagoland means fans wishes are not being considered at all.

It is a lot easier to drive to Joliet from the Midwest than fly to Las Vegas, spend money for hotels and food, and rent a car. That is what Indy Car brass is going to have to rely on for attendance that is better than when they left. Will SMI promote? There are not too many Eddie Gossages out there. Given prior years’ attendance at Kentucky, this year the attendance stunk, relatively speaking.

The other problem I see is the schedule being spread out into October. That is football season. Why would Indy Car do that if they desire better television ratings?

Silly season has officially begun. The biggest early silly season rumor has Dan Wheldon out Panther and Graham Rahal (an American) in. It would be great to see Wheldon stay in the series, but there are few, if any, seats available that would pay him left. He has been through AGR, Ganassi and Panther (twice). Penske appears set, and most everyone else sells their seats these days. Perhaps he could go to Dryer & Reinbold. The idea of Rahal at Panther has some appeal and tremendous upside potential.

OK….who’s going to Japan!? That will be a fun trip in some future year.

  1. The schedule is supposed to come out on Friday. The Kentucky race is rumored to be moved to the first weekend in October. Not sure how wise that decision is. Assuming the Reds are having a good year, they will be going up against the Reds and Bengals.

The KY race attendance was less than in previous years. Two of the sections were not open. However, the other four lower sections and the tower were at least 2/3 full. In Cincinnati, Riverfest was the following night and that draws hundreds of thousands. So Labor Day weekend may not have been the best weekend to run this race anyway.

  2. I wouldn’t mind seeing Wheldon at Foyt also. And Kentucky has confirmed Sunday afternoon, Oct. 2nd on the same weekend bill with the trucks. I attended Kentucky again this year, and the place is growing on me even more. Now what to do about the crowds. . . . .

  3. The way attendance has been, Motegi might be one of the best attended races.

Joliet is gone. At least for now. For Indycar to survive, they’re going to have to get fans in seats. If they can do that then Joliet may be back in the future. If they can’t improve over the next couple years, then it might not matter because Indycar may not be around in its present configuration anyway. So we’ll see.
