The Green Flag Has Waved for IZOD Indy Car Silly Season!

Filed under: The Disciple Blogs — Disciple of INDYCAR @ 11:59 pm

Ganassi or a Penske driver won a race and everyone else competed for scraps. Scott Dixon won the race but Dario Franchitti won the championship. He referred to his championship trophy as a ‘naked guy on a unicycle’ and hopes ‘it will grow on him.’ Way to accept victory graciously, Dario.

One driver who made a comeback of sorts in the latter part of the year was Tony Kanaan. He won a race this season at Iowa, and ran up front at Homestead Miami. Kanaan has been at the center of controversy more than once, and the way he made a two groove track wide in front of Danica caused some amusement.

Kanaan has been one of the most recognizable Indy Car drivers for the past few years with quality sponsorship from 7-11. That sponsorship has now come to an end. Legacy sponsors for big name drivers have become somewhat scarce. Even Jeff Gordon could lose DuPont before long. Kanaan and the IZOD Indy Car Series now have a hurdle to overcome. Even though Kanaan is under contract to Andretti Autosport they have informed him he is free to shop his services around. As one of the most popular drivers in the series where he may end up could get interesting. 7-11 will stay in the series as an associate for Danica. Wonder whether she will stay?

Now that it is the off season, let the silly season begin!

  1. Well, Defender,it is a naked guy on a “unicycle.” If it grows on him, we may have to require a drug test.

Surprised that Kanaan may be let go. He actually improved this year, won a race, and finished pretty well in several. And with Danica leaving by July they will be down two drivers.

The Indy 500 will always survive and do ok. But the child of the IRL/Cart “re-merger” is on life-support. The next two-three years are crucial. I don’t know if the new leadership can get it done or not. I do know that if they take the suggestions of Penske and Ganassi that the odds of survival will drop significantly. A whole lot of the problems of the last 20 years can be traced to these two.

  2. I thought Danica was going a full season with AA. So why would she leave in July? If she blows it in rest of the races in NASCAR this year, she’s done there IMO. She might be finished in race all together.

Life support? Not quite that bad. It’s one sponsor. It really only means TK needs sponsorship to race at AA or find another team. It’s not the first time a sponsor has left, it won’t be the last. And others will come on board. It’s the part of the sport.

I think the sponsorship situation was much worse two years ago than it is today, just not if you’re TK.
