IZOD Indy Car/IMS Photo Ops

Filed under: The Disciple Blogs — Disciple of INDYCAR @ 12:22 am

Today, on a beautiful October morning in central Indiana, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway gathered 33 historic Indy 500 winning cars from 1911 to the present and lined them up in rows of 3 along the main straight.

This was an event that was not publicized and not open to the public. Only members of the press were invited. How many attended is a good guess…but they got some great shots.

My sincere hope going forward is that IMS includes its paying fans in future celebrations of this type. Not including them makes it easy to understand why they have a hard time selling tickets these days. There are quite a few months before May, so fans will most likely get their chances.

Those historic cars lined up are artistic things of sheer beauty.

The definition of irony: The picture at the left. Sam Hornish, one of Penske’s NASCAR pilots, has been left to twist in the wind for next year. Other former open wheelers who have found more success in NASCAR than most other open wheel aspirants include Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman. Mobil 1 has shifted their sponsorship from Roger’s organization to Tony’s. The photo is probably an accident but it’s hilarious.

  1. Judging by the crowd in that first photo, you’d have thought it was raceday at Indy!

Editor’s Note: Could have been. The Brickyard 400 only filled up the place about halfway. Good observation.

  2. Raceday at Indy? The place was almost full!!! The hickyard…. well, that’s another story.

  3. just another ims marketing f. a. r. t. about what once was a great race…… and nobody attended.

perhaps a better way to celebrate the old days would be to bring in guy lombardo and his royal canadians and just prop up his corpse up and play an old scratchy 78 LP version of Auld Lange Syne.

trivia question: Q: what do Guy Lombardo and Ludwig Heimrath have in common?

A: They are in the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame together……so that is a logical tie in that comes around full circle….so to speak.

one thing the photos certainly do show is that IMS is a rustbucket in need of millions of dollars in maintenance….perhaps the lush-ous georgie girls wish they had a sniff of the 600 large that their little snort nose….errr snot nose brother blew on his habit…err racing leeg, so they could spend it on much needed upkeep….a racing nose job if you will.

Ollen B. Smith will take care of that soon enough. it is, after all, a real fixer upper and thats what that ole boy Ollen B does best. funny how you can juggle a few things around and get SMI out of IMS.

Editor’s Note: Is it not the cutest thing when infants peck away on keyboards and nonsense comes out? Idiots who simply do not get it would be better served moving on. The utopian past they have created for themselves never existed and never will. Perhaps it is not too much to hope for a minimal amount of growing up. I am not counting on that.

    • Why don’t guys like this find other hobbies? Life is too short to waste commenting on websites about something you hate…

  4. Do you have a larger version of the picture with all of the cars on the track? That would make a wonderful desktop picture.

Editor’s Note: I would check the IMS (Brickyard) or the Indy Star web sites. I believe they may have galleries.

  5. You are wrong about Newman, I’ve seen numerous interviews with him stating while he grew up in Indiana his main goal has always been NASCAR, his hero was Richard Petty. He had little interest in OW

    • I didn’t read anything in the blog contrary to that.

  6. You are right defender. That lineup is a thing of beauty. And every one a true open wheel car. Not a Delta Wing in the bunch.

  7. Obviously this isn’t race day at Indy. How do I know? Two reasons…

    1) There aren’t any fans in the seats.
    2) The cars are lined up on the main straight in 11 rows of three. Like Barnhart would EVER allow THAT to happen…
