The Best Wrinkle of the Upcoming INDYCAR Racing Season

Eddie Gossage, the best promoter in the business, announced details for the INDYCAR Twin 275s at Texas Motor Speedway in June in the first event after the Indianapolis 500.

-Cars will qualify for the first race in the traditional way.

-Starting positions for the 2nd race will be determined by a blind draw. That adds a great element of unpredictability as opposed to lining up as you finished in the first race.

-If you wreck or have a mechanical problem in the first race, you can drive a backup in the 2nd.

-Each race awards 1/2 points, making the key to do well in both.

This is an idea that is long overdue. It hasn’t been done for thirty years. The notion of a doubleheader adds value for fans at one of the best tracks on the circuit.

Thanks to Eddie Gossage for helping reinvent excitement for Indy Cars at his track every single year. Can you imagine how well INDYCAR would do if every track promoter thought the same way?




  1. I like the idea, but if it’s really two separate races, shouldn’t the points for each race be worth the normal amount?

    I heard Danica say it would be (paraphrasing) mayhem if a backmarker led the field to the green flag. Which reminded me of Dario saying a two-wide restart with a backmarker leading the way could (paraphrasing) result in mayhem. Are they really correct in assessing the dangerously amateurish driving skills of the competition?

  2. This sounds interesting to me, I’m looking forward to watching it. Has IndyCar or any other series for that matter done a “blind draw” like this before?

    With regards to backmarkers causing problems I would hope all the drivers, even the backmarkers, could handle this set up. Afterall, these are supposed to be the best drivers in the world, or at least that is what they keep telling us.

  3. So Danica says ‘a backmarker leading the field to the green flag could cause mayhem?’ Dasio is worried about two wide restarts? I remember Kanaan (not that he’s racing) saying something about getting pushed up in the marbles on a start being, ooooh, ‘too dangerous’? All I can say is (and this means you too, Danica)…feel free to grow a set, boys.

    Let us hearken back to the words of Eddie Gossage when NASCAR drivers said that track weeping was making TMS ‘unsafe’. Or when CART drivers were pulling 5+ G’s in the corners and experiencing dizziness and blurred vision….

    Shut Up and Drive.

  4. If the drivers can remember that the Twin 275s, even at their reduced length, are 275 km long and not just 3 laps, they ought to be able to get through the start of the second half. Brian Barnhart gets blasted for saying stuff like this (rightfully so, a lot of the time), but it applies completely here: “the race is not won on the first lap, but it can certainly be lost”.

    I only wish that they were awarding more points for each half. As it sits, to win the same 50 points that a winner of any other round of the series gets, you have to win both halves of the Texas Twins. With the random draw for the second half, this seems pretty tough to do. It’s entirely concievable that we’ll have a bunch of drivers come out of this weekend with basically the same number of points, clustered in the 30-to-40-points-apiece range, and so there’ll be little to no impact in the overall points standings. That’s not cool. I’d like to see a 40-50% points premium put on an event like this, because it will be so hard to win both halves, or even to finish in the top-3 for both. Maybe 35 for a win, 30 for a 2nd, 25 for a 3rd, then 23, 21, 20, and so on. That’s about the only tweak I’d make.
