Fun Weekend At The Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Filed under: The Disciple Blogs — Disciple of INDYCAR @ 11:50 am

The Brickyard 400 this past weekend turned out to be a pretty good time despite the stifling hot weather of summer and dire predictions that no one would show up. Well over 100,000 actually did and they were treated to a relatively fast event that did not suffer from phantom cautions, tire issues or other past problems. It became a fuel mileage dash but that happens with limited tank capacity.

Paul Menard won the musical chair game and most everyone felt most happy for John Menard, who has been trying for decades to win at IMS. The irony that it is his son makes it cool as well. Paul Menard works hard to do well despite cackles of critics that deride the guy as a ride buyer using daddy’s money. The fact that he is sort of a journeyman-type driver makes winning a race like more than lucky.

Other critics continue howling about folks that treat the 400 as if the 500 does not exist, calling the 400 things like ‘the pinnacle of Indy.’ Blithering old men idiots like Ed Hinton go off because suddenly they feel the ‘stock’ cars violate the dignity of Indy. Well hell, so do fat women with their mammary glands hanging out of clothes they should not be wearing and sweaty hillbillies guzzling beer by the cooler load, but have been a part of the fabric of Indy since long before NASCAR showed up.  Everyone has always been welcome and that is the way it should be. I even miss the snooty F1 freaks who used to show up. The motorcycle people are fine folks as well.

For the first time in a few years I actually had a little fun at a NASCAR race.

  1. Not only was it a great weekend of racing (we attended practice and qualifications on Saturday and the race on Sunday), but on Monday morning I was one of the fortunate ones who got to drive my car for a lap around the IMS. That was worth
staying an extra day in Indiana.
